Piotr wasn't finding very many species in the groups he focuses on - the orthopteroids (Polyneoptera) because we were in the temperate zone and in montane habitats whereas orthopteroids are most diverse in the lowland tropics. This find was exciting however! During a short lunch break we found a colony of Cryptocercus in a rotting log. These cockroaches (order Blattodea) are famous for being possible evolutionary intermediates between cockroaches and the termites (order Isoptera). Unlike most cockroaches but LIKE the termites these animals live in colonies and feed on wood with the assistance of intestinal symbionts.
