IAB Research Project Description

Steller Sea Lion Stable Isotopes

Steller sea lions (northern sea lions) are listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act and “depleted” under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (Angliss and Outlaw 2007). Credit: NOAA.

Any and all uses of these images must include photographer credit.

The Wildlife Toxicology Laboratory (WTL) will work collaboratively with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to study the foraging ecology of Steller sea lions in Alaska to help understand the influence of feeding ecology on mercury contaminant exposure in this species. Staff from the WTL will prepare Steller sea lion whisker samples for analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope content and deliver about 475 samples to the UAF Stable Isotope Laboratory for analysis.
